HTMLText_26ED4964_3B35_C250_41C3_8F750043C1D6.html = It begins with a selection of transport amphorae, used in the eastern necropolis as containers for the burial of newborns and produced in various Greek, Etruscan and Phoenician-Punic centres, which constitute one of the most important complexes of the archaic and classical ages of the Mediterranean basin. Of note is a group of large containers of indigenous production, decorated with painted geometric motifs. Numerous grave goods are displayed in the display cases. Particularly rich is the grave goods from tomb no. 5 of the eastern necropolis, probably relating to the burial of a representative of the Himera aristocracy, which also included two discs, one of lead and the other of iron (probably for competitive activities), weapons and an iron hoe, so much so that it was emblematically defined as the "tomb of the peasant-hero". In the ribbon display case is the cast of the burial known as "of the spouses", where a man and a woman were buried together, recomposed with their hands tenderly intertwined.
Designed by Franco Minissi, the Antiquarium was inaugurated for the first time in 1984; later, after renovation works, it was definitively reopened to the public in 2001. The most notable finds discovered in the excavations of Himera and in other sites in the central-northern Sicily area are preserved there. The exhibition space, divided into several levels connected by ramps, develops along a visit itinerary that retraces the main historical and cultural problems of the Greek colony and its territory.
Informative panels briefly illustrate the main issues concerning the history, topography and archaeological research in Himera. In an adjacent space, dedicated to the Temple of Victory, one of the large lion-headed eaves, dating back to around 480/470 BC, which decorated the sacred building is exhibited; the others are in the Archaeological Museum of Palermo.
In the coin collection, a selection of coins from all the main mints active in the 5th century BC in Sicily, aims to provide a picture of the rich circulation of money within the colony. An important mint was active in Himera, which began issuing silver coins in the second half of the 6th century BC. The characteristic types are the rooster, the offering nymph, the chariot, the Nike and the satyr on a goat. Among the bronze examples, which had wide circulation in the 5th century BC, we remember the types of the Gorgon, the satyr and the laurel crown.

Sulla parete è esposta una significativa scelta delle terracotte architettoniche che decoravano gli edifici del santuario. Proseguendo, in una vetrina a muro, vi è una selezione di materiali rinvenuti nel deposito votivo del tempio A (fine VII-prima metà VI sec. a.C.), ne facevano parte anche due rilevanti piccole sculture di bronzo, una di Athena armata, l'altra di offerente, esposte in una vetrina a parte. Numerose le sculture fittili, in origine policrome, che decoravano frontoni e metope del Tempio B, e che testimoniano l'alto livello qualitativo raggiunto dagli artisti imeresi tra la metà del VI e nel V sec. a.C. Diverse le epigrafi rinvenute nel santuario ; tra queste una base di calcare con iscrizione Eukleidas forse di un piccolo monumento in onore di Euclide, uno dei fondatori della colonia.

The wall display case opens with finds excavated in the XIII and XIV blocks of the lower city, these are objects present in the houses at the time of the destruction in 409 BC. Note two small terracottas of Heracles, with leonté and club, found in a room intended for work activities and probably evidence of a domestic cult. One of them is of fine workmanship and one can perceive the reflection of the great Greek plastic art of the second half of the 5th century BC. Numerous are the fittile, arule, louteria and figured terracotta testimonies. A display window is dedicated to red-figure vases, attributed to the Himera painter.
This level is dedicated to the excavations in the Temenos of Athena, in the upper city. The exhibition opens with fragments of two splendid clay sculptures, probably nikai figures, relating to the acroteria of the final phase of Temple B (second half of the 5th century BC). In a glass case you can admire the precious gold plate with a kneeling Gorgon (3.3 x 2.8 cm), found in the cell of Temple A; a very refined goldsmith's work, datable to the end of the 7th century BC. On the wall is displayed a significant selection of architectural terracottas that decorated the buildings of the sanctuary. Continuing, in a wall display case, there is a selection of materials found in the votive deposit of Temple A (end of the 7th-first half of the 6th century BC), which also included two important small bronze sculptures, one of an armed Athena, the other of an offerer, displayed in a separate display case. Numerous clay sculptures, originally polychrome, which decorated the pediments and metopes of Temple B, testify to the high level of quality achieved by the Himeraean artists between the mid-6th and the 5th century BC. Several epigraphs were found in the sanctuary; among these, a limestone base with the inscription Eukleidas, perhaps from a small monument in honour of Euclid, one of the founders of the colony.

One of them is of fine workmanship and one can perceive the reflection of the great Greek plastic art of the second half of the 5th century BC. Numerous are the fittile, arule, louteria and figured terracotta testimonies. A display window is dedicated to red-figure vases, attributed to the Himera painter.
This level is dedicated to the excavations in the Temenos of Athena, in the upper city. The exhibition opens with fragments of two splendid clay sculptures, probably nikai figures, relating to the acroteria of the final phase of Temple B (second half of the 5th century BC). In a glass case you can admire the precious gold plate with a kneeling Gorgon (3.3 x 2.8 cm), found in the cell of Temple A; a very refined goldsmith's work, datable to the end of the 7th century BC. On the wall is displayed a significant selection of architectural terracottas that decorated the buildings of the sanctuary. Continuing, in a wall display case, there is a selection of materials found in the votive deposit of Temple A (end of the 7th-first half of the 6th century BC), which also included two important small bronze sculptures, one of an armed Athena, the other of an offerer, displayed in a separate display case. Numerous clay sculptures, originally polychrome, which decorated the pediments and metopes of Temple B, testify to the high level of quality achieved by the Himeraean artists between the mid-6th and the 5th century BC. Several epigraphs were found in the sanctuary; among these, a limestone base with the inscription Eukleidas, perhaps from a small monument in honour of Euclid, one of the founders of the colony.
It begins with a selection of transport amphorae, used in the eastern necropolis as containers for the burial of newborns and produced in various Greek, Etruscan and Phoenician-Punic centres, which constitute one of the most important complexes of the archaic and classical ages of the Mediterranean basin. Of note is a group of large containers of indigenous production, decorated with painted geometric motifs. Numerous grave goods are displayed in the display cases. Particularly rich is the grave goods from tomb no. 5 of the eastern necropolis, probably relating to the burial of a representative of the Himera aristocracy, which also included two discs, one of lead and the other of iron (probably for competitive activities), weapons and an iron hoe, so much so that it was emblematically defined as the "tomb of the peasant-hero". In the ribbon display case is the cast of the burial known as "of the spouses", where a man and a woman were buried together, recomposed with their hands tenderly intertwined.
Questo livello è dedicato agli scavi nel Temenos di Athena, sulla città alta. Sulla parete è esposta una significativa scelta delle terracotte architettoniche che decoravano gli edifici del santuario. Proseguendo, in una vetrina a muro, vi è una selezione di materiali rinvenuti nel deposito votivo del tempio A (fine VII-prima metà VI sec. a.C.), ne facevano parte anche due rilevanti piccole sculture di bronzo, una di Athena armata, l'altra di offerente, esposte in una vetrina a parte. Numerose le sculture fittili, in origine policrome, che decoravano frontoni e metope del Tempio B, e che testimoniano l'alto livello qualitativo raggiunto dagli artisti imeresi tra la metà del VI e nel V sec. a.C. Diverse le epigrafi rinvenute nel santuario ; tra queste una base di calcare con iscrizione Eukleidas forse di un piccolo monumento in onore di Euclide, uno dei fondatori della colonia.
